Miliband issues challenge to up the pace - 25 Nov 2008
Speaking at the Environment Agency conference in London Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, said that there needed to be a “upping of the pace” in tackling climate change. He said that power generation could not be left to the energy companies and that there was a real opportunity to increase four-fold the projected 500 megawatts produced by communities, schools and hospitals. He went onto say that the Government saw aviation as of paramount importance but air quality would be considered when the decision about the third runway at Heathrow was made. He added that: “we can’t ignore aviation and shipping when we consider our response to climate change”.He welcomed the £525 million announced yesterday to help climate change including more help for home insulation and challenged agitators and campaigners to get their messages across in advance of Copenhagen 2009. Answering a question about the future of coal fired power stations he said that “coal has to be part of the energy mix”.
