This national conference provided an opportunity to discuss how best to engage disadvantaged communities and bring people from different backgrounds together to prevent growing resentment from leading to increasing segregation. The conference also looked at examples of good practice cohesion projects and discussed what role councils should take in increasing cohesion.

Rev. Jesse Jackson Lecture

American civil rights leader, Rev. Jesse Jackson, will deliver a free public lecture. In a lecture entitled Civil Rights to Equanomics Rev. Jackson will focus on the relationship between economic justice and race. This timely event takes place in the aftermath of this year�s historic American elections and the candidacy of Barack Obama the first black presidential candidate. Rev. Jackson will discuss themes from racial justice to economic equality, as the event marks a number of historic anniversaries: The 90th birthday of Nelson Mandela; the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; and the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King at which Rev. Jesse Jackson was present, standing only a few steps away from Dr King when the fatal shot was fired.

Community Cohesion

Although the overwhelming majority of people in Britain feel positive about living in diverse communities, there are still some new and complex challenges that require national and local action to ensure inclusion and tackle community tensions. The response to the review and recommendations by the Commission on Integration and Cohesion shows that the Government is commitment to promoting better community relations and cohesion. With greater central government support and the announcement by Communities Secretary Hazel Blears of a �50 million investment over three years, local authorities will be able to respond to their own challenges. This conference brought together delegates from government, local authorities, community groups, police and other key stakeholders.

Preventing extremism is the biggest challenge facing Britain s security and cohesion within our communities. Whilst the majority of society celebrates the cultural diversity in Britain , extremism and intolerance remain a very real and significant threat to national security and community safety. This event for national and local government, the police, schools, colleges, universities, youth services and communities explored effective approaches to preventing alienation by working with communities to improve cohesion and promote better understanding. Focusing on countering extremism within Britain s Muslim communities, the conference discussed the impact of government initiatives, such as the preventing violent extremism- winning hearts and minds project and Pathfinder Fund, and set out effective approaches of multi-agency working in local communities to develop relationships and build intelligence.
