Innovation and Growth Unleashing Potential #absinnovation

Our Business Schools can provide the local and regional centres of excellence that not only develop leadership skills but connect and network businesses to research, provide support for key industries, drive innovation and upskill a generation of managers and business leaders to drive growth in the domestic and international economy.

This conference will look at the role Business Schools can play following the Heseltine Report, what they are doing to support business and what role they can play locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. In a global economy you still need a local starting point.

	Key speakers include:

The Rt Hon. David Willetts MP, Minister for Universities and Science

The Rt Hon. The Lord Heseltine CH

Rt Hon Lord Young of Graffham, Adviser to the Prime Minister on small business and enterprise

It doesn’t add up: what’s wrong with maths? #ProperMaths

We can't escape the fact that maths skills are not only core to our understanding of other subjects but integral to the vitality of a modern economy. But is the ‘right’ maths being taught in schools? And how do we ensure students get a ‘proper’ maths education at the right age?

As experts in assessment, Cambridge Assessment believes that a sensible debate is needed to help construct a better maths curriculum for England. The event will comprise three main sections, the central one being a debate entitled ‘Numeracy, arithmetic, maths – what age and at what stage?’ Other elements include discussions on how to make maths relevant and whether technology is changing maths for the better.

	Speakers include:

Lynn Churchman, Trustee – National Numeracy (and former chief executive of the UK Commission for Employment and Skills)

Jennie Golding, deputy chair – Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME)

Tim Oates, Group Director of Assessment Research and Development – Cambridge Assessment

Lynne McClure, Project Director – NRICH

Charlie Stripp, Chief Executive – MEI and Director – National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics

Mark McCourt, Chairman – Teacher Development Trust, CEO – Beluga Learning

Janet De Wilde, Head of STEM – The Higher Education Academy

Conrad Wolfram, CEO – Wolfram Mathematica

 Tony Gardiner, British mathematician.

Innovation and the student experience #abslt13

'Innovation and the student experience' - The ABS Learning & Teaching Conference 2013 in association with the Higher Education Academy, The British Management Association and Nottingham Trent University.

Learning and teaching in universities is in the spotlight now more than ever. Changes in the undergraduate fee system, large and diverse classes, the NSS and technological change are all having an influence, but what exactly constitutes a quality student experience with students, employers and business schools as partners has yet to be clearly articulated. This conference provides a forum for those involved in business education to exchange excellence and discuss issues in teaching practice and pedagogic research.
Gaining a global advantage: Teaching and assessing 21st century skills #C21CA

Equipping students with effective tools and strategies that help them to think critically and reason logically is essential preparation to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Students need these skills sets to enable them to compete with their contemporaries, located all over the world, to secure places in higher education and employment.

Concepts of 21st century skills vary but most include critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, communication, collaboration, information literacy, and life skills. Moreover, self-directed study skills, intellectual curiosity, and independent research skills are also valued highly in employment and higher education courses around the world.

Many people acknowledge the benefits of so called '21st century skills' but are all students getting equal access to them and are they being properly assessed and recognised?

As experts in assessment, we are hosting a debate to evaluate what skills students are currently being taught and whether they are being properly assessed and recognised. It will explore how skills can be incorporated into curricula and properly assessed, as well as addressing the following points:

What is the impact of 21st century skills in international contexts? What's being done in the classroom today? Are the needs of industry and higher education really being met?

The Future of Apprenticeships #apprenticeships12

The Richard Review of Apprenticeships, released yesterday has conducted a thorough investigation of what works and what doesn't in the present system. With a record number of young people having started apprenticeships in 2011, it is vital that they are given the right skills at the right time to meet the needs of industry.

A number of changes have already been made: for example, increasing the minimum length of apprenticeships, the introduction of Higher Apprenticeships, and the new 24+ Advanced Learning Loans, but there is still more to do. This half-day broadcast event will examine the initial results of the Richard Review, with presentations by experts from the education sector and employers on the future of apprenticeships in the UK.

UKDPC New generation, new problems, new drugs: time for a different approach? #UKDPCconf

Much has been done over recent years to tackle drug problems that harm individuals and corrode family life and communities across the UK. Yet, while some progress has been made, significant problems remain and new challenges are emerging.

‘Legal highs’ are increasingly available, with the internet providing new opportunities for drug dealers. New health and policing structures are changing delivery systems in much of the UK, and the recession is both threatening to worsen the social exclusion that underlies many drug problems and simultaneously reduce the ability of local areas to deal with these problems.

This event, the final conference of the UK Drug Policy Commission, brings together drug policy specialists and those with expertise in other fields, to discuss how drug policy can best respond to these changing circumstances.

Feeding a World of 9 billion: can we do it sustainably? #eoesustainability

The East of England Co-operative Society hosts a lecture by Professor Tim Benton, looking at the growing human population, the rise in the global demand for food and ways that this can be addressed.

	Professor Tim Benton said:
"The human population is growing, adding about 35% more mouths to feed by mid-century. At the same time, economic development in emerging economies means that people will become richer and want to eat both more food and more food that is from animals (meat, dairy). Between these factors, global demand for food may rise up to 70% in the next 40 years or so. This presents very large challenges given the impact of climate change and the limited ability for the expansion of agricultural land. In this talk I will outline some of the reasons why demand will increase and ways we can address this demand growth. Above all, however, for agricultural production to continue in the long term, production needs to become more environmentally sustainable and decrease the impact it is having on the environment. This itself is a challenge, as "sustainable agriculture" is not necessarily something that is either simple to define or measure and moves towards sustainability may decrease production (through decreasing yields) and make the challenge worse.

I will address some of the potential solutions towards increasing global production sustainably, and highlight some of the choices that we will need to make about how to do this."

Part-Time, Distance & Flexible Study in Higher Education #ptstudy

The decision by the Coalition government to extend loans to the majority of part-time students has been widely welcomed, although the significant cuts to the teaching grant has meant that most institutions have significantly increased their fees, albeit many students are eligible to take these out as a loan.

This will be the first major occasion to consider the implications of recent higher education policy changes on part-time provision. The first UCAS application figures under the new funding regime show a dramatic drop in applications from mature students, many of whom will have studied part-time previously. Given that nearly four in ten students in UK are part-time, it is a vital and still often overlooked segment of our higher education population, with a growing focus on 18 year olds now considering part-time as their first choice mode of study.

More widely, the higher education sector continues to go through a period of rapid reform. Although the framework for this change is less clear as the Coalition have indicated that there will not be any major legislation following the White Paper published in June 2011. But providers of higher education are looking to find new ways to deliver in more flexible ways, in line with demand from an increasingly diverse student population.

Creative Industries Day - design for innovation #creativeindustries

Creative industries are critical when it comes to innovation and giving ideas an edge in a time of austerity.

The sector is bursting with creatives who thrive on innovation and originality but how will they find direction and investment? “Creative Hubs” are being developed across the country to support artists and innovators to invigorate the economic recovery. It is imperative that creative leaders embrace the latest technology and entrepreneurial skills to empower them in to the future.

As a new culture of learning emerges, we look at effective ways to embrace internetisation and globalisation. This nationwide broadcast brings together leaders across the sector to lay out how best to support the industry and to push design in to areas it has not traditionally been associated with.

Co-creativity and knowledge-sharing can drive the sector forward in this time of constant change. With the release of the European Commission’s paper on the European Design Innovation Initiative we will highlight the benefits of looking to Europe to exploit the full potential of design for innovation.

The 10th Annual School Transport Conference

The school transport sector faces increased demand, increased costs and reduced budgets, leaving many wondering how best to maintain the current level of service.

The drive to cut costs has been ongoing for a few years now, meaning many authorities have already reviewed their operations and delivered significant savings. It is therefore perceived that further savings are much harder to find.

Although the situation may appear bleak, many are exposing themselves as innovation leaders - finding new funding streams and tackling the ever-publicised issue of efficiency.

Now in its 10th year, this national conference for all those working in school transport explored emerging trends, heard the latest policy and guidance and shared best practice.

	The Progress Report

Since its inception, much has been speculated about the true value and future of community budgeting.

This unique conference provides the opportunity to hear a progress report from many of the 16 pilot areas. As Government sets about rolling community budgets across the country, this conference provides a perfect opportunity for future stakeholders to learn from those already well into the implementation.

Why you must view this event:

	* Get an honest account from many of the 16 pilot areas on what works and what doesn't;

	* Hear from the Leader of Kent County Council, a community budget pilot area on how to successfully implement the pooled budget approach;

	* Assess the savings made by Blackpool Borough Council through their integrated service approach.

The 2011 annual conference provided the skills to devise and enact strategies to protect and create healthy local environments, improve energy efficiency and meet climate change challenges. It gave regulators; business; government agencies; local government and campaign groups a chance to set out their view of the way ahead over the next four years, and discuss the dilemmas confronting business leaders, policy‐makers and strategic planners.

This unique event mapped the future for decision‐takers wrestling with the pace of change, investment decisions, and the huge behavioural and economic changes necessary to reduce our carbon output; protect and create healthy local environments; reduce and manage waste and move towards alternative, cleaner energy and transport.

Education is a fundamental part of every child's life, but far too many children with autism are not getting the education they need. With the right support, every child has the opportunity to succeed. Parents and young people agree that knowledge of autism, more than anything else, helps children's needs to be met. However, many teachers say that developing autism knowledge is their biggest challenge when teaching children with autism. In order to support pupils effectively, staff need to understand pupils' needs, their behaviour and the motivation behind it – which is often different to that of children who do not have autism.

With continued global economic uncertainty, the delivery of public financial management (PFM) is more important than ever.

All around the world, public sector spending is under pressure. People are expecting more of their public services and demanding better value for money – whatever the level of development or economic circumstances of their country.

How should policymakers and those that advise them respond to these pressures?

CIPFA and its partners organised our first International Conference so international representatives of professional bodies, national government finance and audit professionals, academics, NGOs and development experts could come together to help answer those questions.
