Recruiting the Next Generation of Foster Carers - meeting the increased demand on the system #ngfost

The ever-increasing shortage of foster carers within the UK has been well publicised, but financial pressures mean local authorities and independent providers are still struggling to find the right methods to market and recruit new carers.

The shortage of foster carers creates significant financial and social pressures on agencies, such as limited placement options for children; the need to place children a long way from home; reduced expenditure on preventative services and the need to buy in foster care provision.

Online viewers of this one-day national conference will have the opportunity to explore best methods to attract new foster carers; improve conversion rates; assess return on investment and, most importantly, the tools needed to implement a successful campaign locally.

Social Work visioning event - Lancaster University

There are many changes currently facing the social work profession. Whilst undoubtedly the current economic climate and cuts to funding present significant challenges, the recommendations that have come from the Reform Board, The Munro Review of Child Protection and the establishment of The College of Social Work all offer new opportunities to build the profession together.

At Lancaster University they see this as a chance to think carefully about the future of social work learning in the region and reshape how the university can best contribute to building a strong and vibrant social work profession.

This consultation and visioning day sought the views of users and carers, practitioners at all levels and a range of settings, students and employers; to help shape the future of social work learning in the region and also to clarify Lancaster University’s role.

Behaviour change in public health - 2nd National Conference Broadcast #behaviourchange12

The Government’s Public Health White Paper made clear the need to encourage healthier lifestyles through behaviour change initiatives. Evidence clearly demonstrates that interventions of this nature can be delivered at relatively low cost with huge health gains. Ultimately, moving people away from a dependency model of health care to self-care will save money and as public health responsibility moves to local government there is a clear opportunity for some real culture shifts.

This conference provides viewers the opportunity to understand the most up-to-date developments in behaviour change science whilst being able to explore the practical implementation of a range of different initiatives.

Through the exploration of best practice case studies from across the country, viewers will gain knowledge to be able to take the opportunities and avoid the pitfalls in implementing their own initiatives locally.

Nursing Quality and Accountability

Nursing standards are critical to care and quality, to patient safety, operational effectiveness and the financial performance of every NHS organisation in the country.

With increasing scrutiny and high profile reports of poor care standards, it is essential that we share good practice, learn from failures and ask the question – what can we do differently?

This conference and live learning broadcast put the spotlight on understanding nursing accountability in challenging times. It brought together leaders from across the nursing profession, along with all those involved in guaranteeing patient safety to share best practice and innovation and help ensure that professional standards are maintained at all times.

The future of recruiting foster carers

There is serious concern for the future of fostering services as children’s services experience an unprecedented increase in the number of children entering the care system.

Managing the increased demand on the system will require an urgent look at the face of foster care and a strategic analysis of the marketing techniques currently used to recruit new foster carers.

Overcoming these difficulties at a time of austerity has fostering providers looking to new, innovative and cost effective ways to communicate the many incentives to foster.

This conference provided delegates with the opportunity to hear from sector leaders, academics and government who will inform on future policy developments and best practice.

Delegates were shown new recruitment techniques while networking with peers to ensure local authorities and independent providers can work together to tackle the increased demand on the system.

What the heck is going on in the NHS?

Resources wasted on NHS “regurgitation” - Lynn Young

Speaking at an event entitled ’What the heck is going on in the NHS?’, Lynn Young, Primary Healthcare Adviser for the RCN had a blunt message to politicians who have undertaken expensive re-organisations of the health service. Describing the process as “regurgitation”, she said that billions of pounds had “gone down the toilet” while those responsible had not “taken one look at the people who deliver the services”. She did, however, describe herself as an optimist and, in discussing the Government’s latest White Paper ‘Liberating the NHS’ she said there was some “reason for hope”.

The answer to the NHS’s problem is to improve the nation’s health, continued Young. “We don’t really know how to do it and we’ve done it very badly over the years but this is where we need to concentrate our action”, she said.

End of Life Care

This conference came in the wake of Lord Darzis High Quality Care for All: Next Stage Review, which identified end of life care as one of the eight care pathways that the NHS will focus on.

The Department of Health published its End of Life Care Strategy in July of last year, which aims to reduce emergency admissions and enable people to live and die in a place of their choice and resulted in the department committing £286 million to end of life care services over the next two years.

To help deliver on these government initiatives this conference brought together primary care, social services, hospices, care homes, community nurses, commissioners, specialist palliative care, out-of-hours services, clinical, voluntary and community services and all those concerned with helping people to have a good death in a place of their choice.

RCN Congress

The theme for this years event is Counting on Care and its choice reflects how nursing is key to both public health and to service delivery. Patients count on the skills and compassion of nurses; the Government counts on their hard work and dedication; and communities count on their professional expertise and spirit of public service.

We’ll be broadcasting all plenary sessions from Harrogate live and all the content will be archived on both our site and the RCN.
