Alex Whitmore- Hewitt

Alex Whitmore- Hewitt, Obstetric Unit Manager, The Portland Hospital

Alex qualified as a Nurse in 1980 and as a Midwife in 1983. From here she continued her studies and undertook the Neonatal Intensive Care course at the Hammersmith Hospital, where she worked as a neonatal nurse. Following this, Alex then returned to work as a Staff Midwife at University College Hospital where she gained experience in the care of high risk clients.

Alex found her true passion as a Community Midwife at North Middlesex where she was able to offer community based care to women from all backgrounds and with varying emotional and social needs. Throughout this time, she developed skills in offering woman holistic based care, including home births and water births.

Following this period, as the Community Manager at the Lister Hospital, (Stevenage, Hertfordshire), she was instrumental in the development of a case-loading community based model with a 99% client satisfaction rate.

In 2001 Alex became of Head of Midwifery at Queen Elizabeth, (Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire), and amongst other achievements, oversaw the refurbishment of the labour ward to include two birthing pools.

In 2004 Alex became Clinical Services Manger of the Obstetric Unit at The Portland Hospital (London), where she has worked to offer choice and a high quality of midwifery care. Throughout her time at The Portland, Alex has overseen many changes including full refurbishment of all the obstetric floors and the addition of holistic services.
