Gail Johnson

Gail Johnson, Professional Development Advisor, The Royal College of Midwives

Gail has been at the Royal College of Midwives since 2005. She is education and practice development advisor in the Learning, research and practice development department International Office - a UK resource. This role involves a full range of education, continuing professional development and activities, which support midwives in their roles, including collaborating with other organisations in developing continuing professional education for midwives particularly in developing midwifery leaders.

Recent projects have been the planning and running of two very successful conferences exploring very different elements of midwifery practice; Legal birth Conference and Bereavement Conference, with over 400 midwives attending. In addition Gail has overseen the continued delivery of the RCM Leadership portfolio, supporting midwives to achieve their true potential as leaders of the profession.

Previously a senior lecturer in Midwifery at Homerton School of Health Studies Cambridge she developed a range of innovative curricula from pre-registration to Masters level, and led on portfolio development and developed links with the university and practice to support “in house” CPD. Prior to entering education Gail was a community midwife, supporting women in home birth and domino births, she has an interest in promoting normality and is a strong advocate for one to one care in labour.

Gail’s professional interests are in midwifery education, continuing professional education and development of midwives, she has a particular interest in health care ethics and is a co-opted member of the RCM ethics advisory committee.
In Sept 2008 Gail was elected as a Board member of the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners, an international organisation which support the assessment of lactation consultants with the aim of ensuring that breastfeeding is viewed as the norm globally. In September 2009 she was selected as Chair Elect of the Board.
Gail trained as a nurse at Harefield and Mount Vernon Hospitals, London and completed her midwifery education at Bedford Hospital.
