John Varley was Group Chief Executive of Barclays Bank Plc from September 2004 to December 2010, having been Deputy Chief Executive from October 2003. Prior to this, he was Finance Director.

John joined the Group Executive Committee in September 1996 and was appointed an Executive Director of the Group in June 1998.
He is a member of the International Advisory Panel of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, and a Non-Executive Director of AstraZeneca PLC.

He is also Chair of Business Action on Homelessness and President of the Employers’ Forum on Disability.
