Speaker Biography

Robert Powell

Robert Powell has spent a lifetime in education, as a classroom teacher, Head of Department, Head of Year and Deputy Head. He took over the Headship of a failing school in an area of multiple deprivations and led his staff in transforming its fortunes, improving recruitment and more than doubling its examination grades and staying-on rates.

He passionately believes that teaching, learning and assessment are the top priority for raising achievement and has led training on this agenda with over 1000 schools, scores of sixth form colleges and numerous FE colleges, focusing on both academic and vocational courses. He has written eight books on teaching and learning, his most recent being Personalised Learning in the Classroom, and the highly successful Raising Achievement and Active Whole-Class Teaching. He is renowned for his challenging and humorous style of presentation.
