Christina Yan Zhang

Christina is from China. She has been in the UK for 5 years. She was Global Development Officer, Loughborough Students Union (LSU) 2007-2009. 18 months after she initiated ‘Lufbra’s Going Global’ campaign, LSU was awarded NUS 'Best International Students Union' & 'Best International Students Event' of the year 2009. Higher Education Academy published her case study on 'Internationalise all students' experience in 18 months'.

After G20, Christina was the only student invited to attend former PM Gordon Brown's main strategy launch event of 'Building Britain's Future, New industry, New Jobs’. Christina also met, successfully lobbied current PM, David Cameron in 2008 over continuing investment into PMI strategy to attract more overseas students to Britain. In March 2011, Christina was the only student leader across Europe to represent a country which is not her home country- the UK, to be received by Pál Schmitt, President of Hungary at his Presidential Residence during Hungary's EU Presidency. Christina also impressed Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Commonwealth Chairperson-in-Office, PM of Trinidad and Tobago in the House of Commons on 18th March, 2011 Commonwealth Day with her suggestion to mobilise students across the commonwealth to promote “Women as Agents of Changes”

Christina has been sitting on many Prime Minister Initiatives on UK Education Internationalisation related committees, eg. UKCISA Board, Prime Minister Initiatives Advisory Group, UNESCO UK Education Committee, UK HE International Unit Erasmus for All Advisory Group, British Council Erasmus Consultative Group; UK Border Agency Joint Education Taskforce Group, International Group, Employers Taskforce Group; Student Action for Refugees "Access to Higher Education Group"; QAA Student Sounding Board, QAA International Students Advisory Group, Steering Group of UUK ‘Guide to Enhancing the International Student Experience’, European Students Union Immigration &Ethnical Minority Working Group, European Students Union Quality Assurance Expert, Council for Education in the Commonwealth, BIS/UUK Business involvement and benefits to employability Expert Group-established by David Willetts.

Christina was “British Council International Student of the Year 2008, East Midland”, “Top 30 Outstanding Young Chinese in the UK” in 2010 by British Chinese Youth Federation, “Female Young Achiever of the Year 2011” in the UK judged by Baroness Margaret Jay, former leader in the House of Lords

In 2009, as an independent candidate, Christina was elected as the first international student to sit on NUS National Executive Council Block 15 position, since its creation in 1976 and now NUS International Students Officer, represents all international students in the UK. Her aim is to globalise the experience of all 7 million UK students to beat economic downturn.
