Joe Powell is a 34 man with Asperger Syndrome diagnosed at the age of twenty in 1996. Like many others with Autism Joe and his family have had lifelong struggles in attaining appropriate funding and support for his care needs. Joe had made a lot of progress since he received his first specialist care service in 1997. From being very shy and non-verbal Joe is now very confident and independent and is currently doing a BA Joint Honours in English and Creative Writing. After a fight to leave care and get an Individual Budget, Joe is determined to support those organisations who also share his anger at the injustice of the social care system. A system Joe believes is far more of a challenge to people with disabilities than the actual disabilities themselves.
