Admissions to Higher Education
27 Nov 2007

The key challenge, as identified by the Schwartz and Wilson Reviews, remains the development of fair, transparent and professional admissions policies and procedures that not only enable students to make well-informed, effective HE applications but also enable universities to select candidates who will be able to finish the course whilst simultaneously minimising barriers to admissions and widening access. As the first cohort of students make five initial applications rather than six and a new A* grade is introduced at A-level to help HEIs distinguish between top candidates, this conference brought together an audience of senior managers from HE and FE to map out the future vision for effective applications and admissions to HE and considered how to prepare for change. The latest policy developments for admissions offices, schools and FE colleges were discussed as was the growing international market; the future role of UCAS; the development of 14-19 Diplomas as an entry route into HE; and the forthcoming review in 2010/11.
