Brown says sorry to nurses - 11 May 2009
Prime Minister Gordon Brown apologised to delegates at the Royal College of Nursing Summit in Harrogate on behalf of all political parties for recent revelations regarding expense claims by MPs. Speaking live on Policy Review TV, Mr Brown, who is the first Prime Minister to address the RCN Congress in its 93 year history, said that the public had a right to demand high standards in parliament and, as is the case with the health service, trust is of critical importance. The recession is “no excuse” for not investing in the NHS and nurses pay and nurses need to be more involved and central to the running of health services. Nurses are now performing operations, prescribe drugs and work as managers and consultants, said the Prime Minister.
Reinforcing the dignity theme of the conference, Mr Brown said that social care was increasingly important as people are living longer and that there is a responsibility to look after elderly people who have served the community. Mixed sex wards have been around for too long and must be dealt with as a priority, he said.
