John Ashton is Special Representative for Climate Change at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

In 2002 he co-founded and became chief executive of E3G, an independent not-for-profit agency brokering deals on climate and energy between developed and developing countries.

He was seconded to the role from E3G to the FCO.

Prior to 2002 he headed the FCO's environment policy department for 4 years. He joined the FCO in 1978.
