Speaker Biography

Michael Roberts

Mike joined the University of Warwick as IT Director in February 2009. Previously he held a number of senior IT management roles with Glaxo SmithKline and prior to that had a successful career in sales and marketing.
Since joining the University Mike has overseen a transformational change management programme – moving the IT department from a technology focused, somewhat isolated department, to a user focused, service orientated team integrated with the wider organization. This transformation is ongoing but already significant changes in benefits management, service improvement and user engagement have been delivered.

The foundation of Mike’s achievements at Warwick has been the introduction of process and data led solution design – using user input, Six and Lean Sigma techniques to redesign processes to deliver improvements in user experience and reduce waste.

On more specific points Mike has led a number of high profile, high value projects : a £10m network investment delivering a sector leading network infrastructure and £15m cost avoidance over 10 years; implementation of the highest efficiency data centre in UK HE; delivering significant cost and energy savings through virtualization of physical assets; the introduction of collaborative software to support global, multi-institution working; the introduction of high definition and desk-top video conferencing.

Mike provides input to the institution at a general management level – contributing to areas outside of his IT expertise. His experience in running sales management teams in the commercial sector prior to joining the University provides a valuable ‘alternative’ viewpoint in many situations. Mike has extensive experience in capital project sales, commercial management, contract negotiation and channel management.
