Speaker Biography

Ben Lewis

Ben has been on the AMOSSHE Executive Board for four years, including one year as Treasurer and two as Vice Chair. His work for AMOSSHE has included stakeholder engagement and management, communications and representation of the Organisation to government and sector bodies.

He is head of a multi-disciplinary team of student services professionals at Cardiff University covering advice and guidance, childcare, financial support, international student support, disability, dyslexia, mental health and the Chaplaincy. Recent work has included beginning development of a virtual student centre approach through the Cardiff Student High Street initiative (Summer 2012).

Ben is involved in ACPA-College Educators International and is a member of the International Advisory Board of ACPA.

Previous roles include Policy Adviser for the Higher Education Funding Council for England working on policy related to social inclusion, lifelong learning and student support. In this capacity Ben represented HEFCE on the Student Services Review (2002) and a series of research reports into student finance and services including ‘From Elitism to Inclusion’ and was student support policy lead for HEFCE from 2001-2002.

Ben spent two years prior to this as the elected student union Education and Welfare Officer with Aberystwyth Guild of Students and has an Msc (Econ) in Strategic Studies from the Department of International Politics at Aberystwyth University.
Outside the HE sector Ben has worked as Principal Officer for Wales for the Electoral Commission. This included time working on campaigns to improve voter turnout among 18-30 year olds and as an independent observer at elections in Wales and Northern Ireland.
