Understanding London Life
25 Jun 2008
Ipsos MORI Social Research Institute Event held in central London
With the election of a new mayor, this Ipsos MORI event looked at the challenges facing London in terms of quality of life and NHS, local government and policing. In particular, the question of why it is that outer London has some of the most dissatisfied residents with councils and hospitals in Britain compared to inner London, was explored. Based on a new in-depth analysis of over 41,000 interviews, this conference looked at the issues facing public services in London and the need to deal with them. When asked what it is that worries Londoners, Ben Page, Chairman, Social Research Institute at Ipsos MORI said that, although knife crime, anti-social behaviour and the safety of young people were important, it was the cost of living and house prices that come out top. Describing a "distressing" meeting he had attended with a group of insolvency practitioners, he said that they were "rubbing their hands with glee" at the likely fallout from the housing market crash. The trouble would manifest itself in October, said Ben Page, "about the time of the party conferences".
