Sue Bernhauser

Sue Bernhauser has been the Dean of Human and Health Sciences at the University of Huddersfield for six years and prior to this was both the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Health and the Head of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Brighton.

She is a Nurse by profession having practiced in both Learning Disability and Adult Nursing before moving into Nurse Education. She has held Ward Managers posts in Southampton, Portsmouth, Glasgow and Dorset. Her posts in Nurse Education were in Birmingham, Sunderland and Brighton, the latter where she led the incorporation of the College into the University. Further engagement with Nurse Education was gained through holding honorary contracts with Birmingham City University and the University of Northumbria before moving into Higher Education in 1994.

In her capacity as Chair of Council of Deans she works closely with the Department of Health on professional and workforce issues. She is the UK representative, and founder member, on the Global Alliance of Nurse Education and Scholarship (GANES); an International Group exploring how nurse educators might work together to improve the health of individuals worldwide.

Sue is a member of the Partnership Board of the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust and serves on a number of committees. Her research interests include leadership, student assessment and simulation in health programmes, from a strategic perspective.

In 2009 Sue was appointed to the Prime Minister’s Commission looking into the future of Nursing and Midwifery which reported in February 2010.
