Since 2009, Professor Gaskell, a chemist who specialised in spectrometry, has had responsibility for an institution with 20,000 students and 3,500 staff, and an annual turnover of £370 million. He also chairs the board of the Higher Education Statistics Agency, and has recently been re-elected as treasurer of Universities UK.
